INGLÉS: Phrasal verbs con DO

En inglés, es muy habitual añadir preposiciones o adverbios al verbo, lo que cambia en muchos casos completamente el significado. Son los tan temidos phrasal verbs.

Yo recomiendo siempre memorizarlos como una unidad y a través de ejemplos concretos.

Hoy vamos a repasar las combinaciones con el verbo “to do” (“hacer”)

- “Do away with” (“abolir”) 

The government should do away with those old regulations 
El gobierno debería abolir esos viejos reglamentos

- “Do up” (“redecorar, remodelar”) 

When I do this room up, I’ll paint the walls blue / When I do up this room, I’ll paint the walls blue 
Cuando remodele esta habitación, pintaré las paredes de azul

- “Do without” (“arreglárselas) 

Now that they have a regular income, they should be able to do without any help from us 
Ahora que tienen unos ingresos fijos, deberían arreglárselas sin nuestra ayuda

En muchas ocasiones se omite el objeto,

If there isn’t any milk, we’ll have to do without (it) 
Si no hay leche, tendremos que arreglarnos sin ella
